Marketing event Brisbane – Wed 21 Sept 2011: The shift to inbound marketing

Earlier this week I was asked to take part on a panel at the next Networx event. The topic is “The shift to inbound marketing” and they were interested in me because of my blog.

Inbound marketing is basically your content, market research and SEO attracting your clients (or in my case readers to my blog). Small business, start ups and independents like me should focus on inbound marketing  to grow their business and engage their target market. Any business can use it to find out more about their existing customers and enhance the customer experience (which in turn strengthens loyalty).

The opposite of inbound marketing is outbound marketing (advertising, sponsorships, direct mail, emails etc.) where you engage tools to shout on your behalf and try and attract customers. This is costly but is often the first step businesses make when it comes to promotion.

As an independant blogger I don’t have a marketing budget so I rely on my content to attract my target market. I will discuss the benefit of a blog as a vital tool in your inbound marketing arsenal with the emphasis on content that is relevant to your audience and in line with your brand.

If you’re a blogger, small business with no budget or a big business hoping to get more out of your budget and deepen customer relationships then you will benefit from this event. Also on the panel are Llew Jury from Reload Media (talking about SEO), Anna Streater from Grand Brands (talking about market research) and myself talking about content.

Tickets are $60 and everyone is welcome to attend. More details and to book - visit the Networx website.

Win a ticket!

I have a ticket to give away to this Networx event. To enter just leave me a comment and I’ll pick a random winner.

Make sure you use a valid email when making a comment so I can contact you. Winner will be drawn on Monday 19th September at 5pm. Please enter the draw only if you can attend the event in Brisbane on Wednesday 21st September.

Video is from Networx workshop on Blogging & video marketing for business, but it gives you an idea of what to expect when you attend.

A couple of weeks ago Daniel Alexander Couture approached me to shoot two of his garments for press. He’s taking part in a Panache Inner Circle event at the Sofitel (Brisbane) on September 16th 2011 and therefore needed shots to release to press. We shot these on a Sunday afternoon in the foyer of the Sofitel hotel.

I included my favourites below. I haven’t done any retouching on these, just colour and exposure correction. The model Adele was great to work with and I just wish we had more garments, I could have stayed there all day!

You can visit Daniel Alexander Couture in Fortitude Valley (Brisbane) or on the Daniel Alexander Couture Facebook page.

Nail tutorial: Zebra tips and Chanel 531 Peridot nail polish

The new Chanel Nail 531 Peridot is a green-gold high shine colour, very dramatic and rich. When I first got it I thought it’d be perfect to pair up with a funky print for contrast. I used the Sally Hansen Salon Effects – Real Nail Polish Strips in Wild Child (SKU #4408-33) which is a fun zebra print. Sally Hansen Salon Effects – Real Nail Polish Strips are easy to use – I go into detail below.

Tools

Step 1

Apply a double coat of Chanel Nail Vernis in 531 Peridot.

Step 1

Step 2

Step 2

Have all your tools ready. Sally Hansen Salon Effects – Real Nail Polish Strips in Wild Child (SKU #4408-33), wooden cuticle tool, Manicare French manicure tip tapes and nail scissors.

Tools

Step 3

Remove 2 Manicare French manicure tip tapes – make sure they don’t split apart, you want double the size of 1 tape. This isn’t a dainty French tip look, you want them to be a noticeable feature on the nail.

Stick the 2 tapes on the back of a Sally Hansen Salon Effects – Real Nail Polish Strip – this is your guide for the size of the zebra strip. Use your nail scissors to cut the strip.

Step 4

Step 4

Remove the sticker backing from your piece of Sally Hansen Salon Effects – Real Nail Polish Strip and stick it on your nail. Make sure you match the centre of the strip to the centre of your nail. Using the wooden cuticle tool push down the strip, smoothing all edges.

Step 5

Cut off the excess of the Sally Hansen Salon Effects – Real Nail Polish Strip from the top and sides.

Step 6

Repeat all above steps until you finish all nails, then apply top coat.

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival Brisbane 2011 wrap party

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival Brisbane 2011 – Wrap party

The Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival Brisbane 2011 wrap party started immediately after the highlights parade. We were ushered into the QPAC pavillion where staff greeted us with champagne and a suite of Sanpellegrino beverages.

The vast blue stage was soon filled with energetic and nimble dancers who performed tirelessly the entire evening. Canapes resembled art with their shapes and colours and I’m told they were all very delicious.

Funky mobiles decorated the space above the guests, and on  closer inspection I realised they were constructed of wooden hangers and swing tags from designers who took part in Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival Brisbane this year.

Stylish Brisbanites gathered for a night of all nights to celebrate an end to yet another successful run of the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival in Brisbane.

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival Brisbane 2011 – Highlights Parade

The Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival Brisbane highlights parade was held on Friday 26th August and marked the end of a week long fashion festival. Designers featured included Akira, Easton Pearson, Paul Hunt, Foxton Danger, Daniel Alexander Couture, Gina Kim, Francis Leon, Sacha Drake, Aurelio Costarella, Roopa Pemmaraju and many more.

There were bursts of vibrant colour and lively pattern in-between soothing tones and flowing fabrics. Styling was well executed, the focus remaining on garments at all times. Shoes were the hero in this story, often adding a subtle edge to simpler outfits and bringing a modern twist to elegant pieces.

Catwalk and lighting designs were kept simple, which was probably the best option for a group show like this one. It was the garment, hair, make up and the models’ walk that created the mood for each designer. Music was upbeat, modern and fresh and complemented the event from start to finish.

All in all it was a fabulous end to a successful week for Brisbane fashion. Below are some shots I took of my favourite pieces.

Enjoy!

EP by Easton Pearson pop up store launch

‘EP by Easton Pearson’ pop up store launch

Brisbane fashion powerhouse Easton Pearson just opened their ‘EP by Easton Pearson‘ pop up store in Winn Lane. Pamela Easton and Lydia Pearson celebrated this milestone only days after their diffusion line ’EP by Easton Pearson‘ made its debut at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival (Brisbane) with the 2011 Cruise collection.

The pop up store opening was a Mexican fiesta themed event; lively and thoroughly enjoyable. Sangria, floating corn chip bowls and breaking of the piñata were a great touch. A few well aimed hangers and that piñata exploded with abundance, glittery feather necklaces poured out. No sooner than they were gathered in baskets, Pamela and Lydia offered them to their guests. That was most kind – they participated so joyously and then shared the love and made sure everyone left with a little token of their appreciation.

Thank you once again to Easton Pearson for having me at the fiesta, I had a fantastic time and I’m glad I got to share this moment with you all.

Izabel & Sebastian secret garden soiree

Izabel & Sebastian secret garden soiree

Monday 22nd August 2011 was a big day for Brisbane store Izabel & Sebastian. They showcased their labels in a show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival (Brisbane) and hosted a secret garden soiree at their store after the show.

Patrick, Izabel & Sebastian owner, told me that the show was fantastic and their labels made an impact on the catwalk (see photos on the Izabel & Sebastian blog). They showed their Brisbane labels Bianca Batson, Emma Rea and House of Ezis. Unfortunately there was a mishap on the runway, a model stumbled and grazed her leg, but these things happen sometimes. I hear that she carried on despite the accident and finished her walk like a pro.

Danny and myself attended the secret garden soiree themed after party at the Izabel & Sebastian store in Southbank. It gave me a chance to browse through the racks and shelves and drool over a few new Melissa styles. I couldn’t not make a purchase, I mean I was already there and it just had to be done.

The party had a great turnout and a fabulous time was had by all.

New York, New York – love at first sight

We spent the first part of July this year in New York, after spending June in Europe. I had carefully planned my wardrobe to take into account summer temperatures, garment weight, maximum style at maximum comfort. Europe worked well with what I packed so I just couldn’t wait for New York.

Due to those unforeseen circumstances that always seem to happen to us, we had no luggage the majority of our stay in New York. That meant no carefully selected wardrobe, accessories, hair straightener, hairbrushes, make up (other than my necessities that were in my handbag), no perfume and none of the amazing shopping I did in Paris. Oh, and no underwear… The airline gave us a grooming bag and a $100 voucher each to go and buy some undies and clothes. My first thought was ‘Dear lord, what can I buy for $100 in New York?!”. I had this awful image of us walking around in cheap shorts and ‘I HEART NY’ t-shirts for the rest of the trip. Gulp.

We arrived to our hotel very late at 9pm, we stayed at the Paramount Hotel in Times Square. Staff there were lovely and helpful – they recommended we go to Forever21 as they were open till midnight. At this stage I was in love with America! Retail shops open till midnight, that’s even better than shops in Europe being open till 8pm (note to Australia – catch up!). At Forever21 I bought enough clothing and underwear for a few days and somehow I managed to get all that for $98.

We made the most of the time we had there and loved every minute despite the circumstances. I am certain there will be another trip to New York soon, this was just an interesting start to a life long affair…

Kati

My lovely friend Kati

This Saturday I met up with my lovely friend Kati. I met her at marketing school and I can safely say she was the best dressed person there. Not one to be intimidated by stylish women, I had a chat to her and we became instant friends.

Kati writes a blog here in Brisbane called Loopistyle. We often talk about fashion, love and life.

This particular Saturday we went to a fashion market which was so awful I won’t even mention it. To compensate, we had a fresh lemonade at West End markets and sat in a live music area where Kati shared her latest issue of Marie Claire with me. What a darling!

So there we sat, peaceful, in a fashion induced daydream, sipping on chilled lemonade.

We quickly arranged a shopping trip on Monday to get her the wedges she wanted, before rushing off on a mad fruit and veg shop because y’know you can’t eat fashion magazines….

Ruby Olive jewellery launch

Ruby Olive jewellery winter 2011 collection launch

I am a lucky girl. I moved to Brisbane three years ago in 2008 and I didn’t know a soul. Now, after writing this blog for the past few years I’ve gotten to know so many lovely people. One of those people is Skye Anderton, the designer for Ruby Olive, a beautiful, colourful jewellery label.

Last week I attended Ruby Olive‘s new jewellery collection launch at Lock and Load bistro in West End (Brisbane).  Just before the launch I ducked out to Flowers by Jane in Brisbane City and created the most colourful, vibrant and fragrant bouquet for Skye. I’m a lover of colour and spring so (with the help of Natasha at Flowers by Jane) I picked out some gorgeous gerberas, orchids and early cheer which Natasha crafted into a beautiful bouquet. I knew that Skye, after designing two new collections this season, would be in need of some recharging and flowers have always done that for me. Luckily, she loved them! Phew…

Accompanied by my husband Danny (who also agreed to take photos for me this evening) I went to West End with great anticipation.

I wore my brand new sequin jacket from Sweet As Candy Vintage, a mustard flare skirt from Forever21, Badgley Mischka handbag, Ruby Olive polka dot cuff and Giorgio Armani heels. My greatest accessory though – after my lovely husband – was the Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist Intense #40 Satin Bright Orange lipstick. LOVE!

Jamie Louise Brisbane fashion stylist

Fashion Insider: Jamie Louise – Fashion / Event Stylist

I met Jamie Louise late last year when she styled me into a Gucci and a DKNY dress. She’s a Melbourne girl living in Brisbane and she’s tireless in her work. Here’s what she had to say about her career so far.

Jamie Louise

Tell us a little about yourself

I grew up in Melbourne, Australia. Melbourne, my other true love. I now live in Brisbane with my fiancee and our 4 year old labradoodle, Roxy. I love travel and adventure and discovering new things. I am a really strong advocate for the causes I believe in and am always ready to petition and get my placard out for what I believe in.

I have an amazing support network of family and friends and love sharing food and wine and good times…

How did you get your start in fashion?

I was introduced to the world of fashion at a very young age, my mother made belts in the 80′s for large Australian retailers. I can recall dancing around in my mothers shoes (7 sizes too big for me) whilst she would be doing an all-nighter to get her order finished on time!

My uncle Colin is the person who actually gave me my start in the fashion business. Colin has been in the fashion industry for the past 35 years. He has done everything from design to retail and I was so lucky to have him as my mentor in the crazy land of fashion!

I have a fairly corporate background so when Colin and I joined forces in 2009 we started Jamie Collins, a fashion agency that focused on representing local and international labels within the Australian market.

After relocating to Brisbane in 2010 I decided to turn my hand to fashion styling as a way of still being connected to the fashion world whilst I develop an online e-commerce site. My site should be ready to launch in early 2012. So stay tuned!

Why did you choose fashion?

I’m an artist and I feel that I am really lucky to work in a creative industry that allows me the freedom to express that creativity. The beauty of my job is that its always different, always new and forever changing! Isn’t that great?

After coming from a corporate and regimented background where consistency is key it feels really nice to just be and do what feels good! Oh and the people! I meet the most amazing and talented people! From other artists such as designers to models and all sorts in between.

Is the fashion industry what you expected it to be?

No. It’s not all champagne and catwalks, it’s hard work and long hours and sometimes very little reward. When I started my agency I thought it would be really glamorous, but the shine wore off fast and the challenges began! Now that I understand the industry a little better I can accept its flaws…

What does your job consist of?

I work in many different fields of styling; any given day can be different which is something I totally love!

I can be doing a personal styling job, a music video, an event, a photo shoot or a workshop. It’s really a ‘create-your-own-adventure’.

Describe your week

It’s always changing! I am freelance so it’s all about being self motivated and interacting with people who will pass on my information. At the moment I am working with a close friend of mine to develop a series of workshops so it’s keeping us very busy!

Roughly how many hours do you work per week?

Depending on what I have on! It really is so different week to week. But I try to spend at least 3 hours a day working on creating contacts and studying latest fashions.

What are the key skills you need for your role?

  • Self motivated
  • Independent thinker
  • Ability to work in a team
  • Ability to work alone
  • Energetic!
  • Take criticism
  • Encourage feedback
  • Be a networker
  • Good listening skills
  • Good communication skills
  • Love fashion

What do you enjoy most about your role?

The people, hands down. There is just this synergy you feel when you are constantly surrounded by other creatives that I  just cant explain – it’s like the feeling that anything is possible.

What do you find challenging?

Knowing when to say “no”. Its my biggest obstacle. I love the creative process so much that its really difficult to turn down projects, but I find I am learning.

What do you do in your time off?

I love Bikram Yoga, Jazz, food and wine and spending time in good company.

What’s the highlight of your career so far?

Every new experience is a highlight! I really can’t say enough about the people I work with, their talents and experience is a wonder to be around. I don’t believe you ever stop learning so I just want to continue being included in creative process.

Do you have any advice for someone starting out in fashion?

You never know it all… No job is too small and leave your ego at the door.

Finish this sentence: Fashion is…

The truest form of self expression… An art that everyone practices.

Mirror Mirror Agencies Brisbane

Black Light Terminal – Mirror Mirror Agencies Pre-Anniversary Show

Brisbane based modelling agency Mirror Mirror Agencies are turning one in September and to celebrate they hosted a show on August 5th at C Gallery on James Street.

This year’s event showcased fashion from Soot, Melange Boutique, The Bunker Boutique, Zara McKenna, Rochadames and I Envy Alex, with hair by Vanilla Salon and make up by the Academy of Make Up.

The show had a post-modern feel, blurring the boundaries of wearability. Deconstructed garments floated on the tape outlined runway while jagged sounds littered the air. Hair was sculptural and raw; a teased mess of gigantic proportions. Model’s faces were at times marked with neo-tribal paint evoking a sense of belonging in a disjointed procession.

I hope you enjoy my collection of images. If you’re in them feel free to leave me a comment.

USA Shopping Affair – personal shopping service

When I was in New York last month I shopped like a maniac. Sephora, Betsey Johnson, Barneys – you name it. The most frustrating thing? Not being able to shop at these places now I’m back in Australia. Enter USA Shopping Affair!

USA Shopping Affair offers personal shopping buying sprees in the USA as well as mail forwarding for all your online shopping all the way to Australia.

Each month they nominate a US online retailer that they purchase bulk orders on behalf of clients, allowing them to buy single items without the excessive expense.

Charmaine Graham, founder of USA Shopping Affair says that “there are a lot of companies based in the US offering package forwarding services, but none are coordinated from Australia consolidating multiple client purchases to enable discounted shipping. Essentially USA Shopping Affair facilitates ‘collective buying power’ that an individual would not normally have access too. The result is an affordable and reliable shipping option that offers online shoppers even more incentive to snap up bargains from the US.”

HOW IT WORKS:

  • You let them know what you want to buy;
  • They purchase on your behalf and arrange shipment to you;
  • You pay the cost of the item plus applicable US sales tax;
  • They charge a 10% personal shopping fee based on purchase cost;
  • They ship to you at a low fixed fee of $10.00 per item (discount is available on 5 or more products purchased in same transaction.)

Price Comparison – M.A.C Lipstick

  • M.A.C. Australia
  • $36.00 (inc tax) product cost
  • $10.00 domestic shipping
  • $46.00 TOTAL COST

VS

  • M.A.C. United States
  • $15.45 (inc tax) product cost
  • $ 1.55 (10%) personal shopping fee
  • $10.00 domestice & international shipping
  • $27.00 TOTAL COST – that’s a 40% saving

Coco Ribbon

Behind the label: Coco Ribbon

Coco Ribbon

  • Your name: Alison Chow
  • Website: Coco Ribbon
  • Facebook : Coco Ribbon
  • Your occupation: Creative Director
  • Place of residence: Sydney

Describe your label

Coco Ribbon is a fashion and lifestyle brand of bohemian-luxe fashion and chic gifts with heart which exists to indulge and inspire those who believe life is too short for ordinary. Think luxe fabrics, bespoke opulent prints, embellishments, sequin jackets and maxi dresses.

Who does your label appeal to?

Women who are not afraid to stand out from the crowd – who love luxe fabrics and flamboyant prints. She is feminine, confident and believes life is too short for ordinary. And she wants unique pieces that will become treasured favourites.

Coco Ribbon

Why do you think your work is loved by your customers?

The colours, the prints, the fabrics, the embellishments and the feminine silhouettes. The clothes are beautiful, feel luxe on the body and usually have an element of uniqueness or surprise to them – like a flash of unexpected orange as a sash on a blue print dress

Who would you most like to see in your designs?

I can’t think of anyone more beautiful that I would like to see wearing my label right now than Rosie Huntington-Whiteley.

What is the price range of your garments / products?

$195 – $995

How many collections do you produce per year?

Two.

Where is the label manufactured?

UK, India, Scotland for cashmere. It depends what garment it is.

Coco Ribbon

Where is the label stocked?

Do you have plans to expand stockists beyond Australia?

Yes we have been stocked in Harvey Nichols in the UK previously as well as Neiman Marcus and Scoop in the US among other international boutiques and plan to reintroduce the label to these retailers again next year.

How did the label get started?

As a luxe fashion and lifestyle boutique in Notting Hill in 2002. Originally we were the first store in London to bring over Aussie designers under one roof including Sass and Bide, Willow, Zimmermann among others.

In 2007 we launched our own label of fashion, soft accessories, lingerie and cosmetics. My partner and I went our separate ways in 2009 and I have relaunched the online and fashion business as the sole Creative Director based out of Sydney.

How big is the design team?

Right now it is me and my Production Manager with design and pattern cutting experience. I art direct the prints using local graphic designers in Sydney.

Coco Ribbon

How did you get started in design?

I have had no formal design training although I recently completed a fashion illustration course at Whitehouse Institute of Design so Icould put my ideas and designs onto paper.

It was running my own boutique in London for the last eight years that gave me the confidence to know what women want when it comes to clothes and i have always been drawn to a specific aesthetic when it comes to colour, prints and design.

How would you find staff?

If you create a brand that people know and love then often you attract great people who want to work for you. We would always employ people who approached us who were passionate about our brand and had done their research on Coco Ribbon.

We would advertise on our website and look at those who sent us their CV and a personal passionate covering email stating exactly the role they were seeking. For higher level positions such as a CFO we would use the best industry headhunters.

How do you find inspiration for your work?

Inspiration can be found everywhere but i find i’m most inspired when i’m relaxed and usually travelling. New York, Paris and Marrakech are three of my favourite places for finding inspiration.

I also find inspiration in nature – from butterflies and birds to colourful coral and creatures under the sea nothing is more spectacular than what mother nature creates.

Coco Ribbon

What have you found most rewarding about having your own label?

Having a vision of a dress or garment and then seeing it to fruition is most rewarding. Then seeing others enjoy what you have created with them looking amazing in your designs is a fantastic feeling.

What do you wish you knew at the start of your label?

Where to begin? There is so much I’ve learned yet I feel like there is still an infinite amount to know. For every designer/creative director it would be different but for me I would say to trust your instincts always and dare to do things differently.

Don’t just do what others have done before you – think outside of the box.

The next step for your label is…..

Watch this space…

Make up for ever Rouge Artist Intense #15

Spring lipstick colours by Chanel, Face of Australia, Make up for ever and Australis

Here in Brisbane it’s the middle of winter but spring is slowly coming through our stores. After my overseas trip I’ve fallen in love with colour (Paris and New York love colour) so I decided to post about lipstick colours for spring. I guess I felt the need to fast forward the next few months and be in spring already.

I played with various pinks, oranges and purples by Chanel, Face of Australia, Make Up For Ever and Australis.

I started the shoot with all my base, blush and eyes fully done but with just a nude lip pencil for a neutral base. Even though I am an expert retoucher I decided to not retouch my own images. No one is perfect and that includes me. I will never claim otherwise and I don’t want to add to any image related problems that girls might already experience.

Starting point….

Starting with plain lips

1) Australis Colour Inject Mineral Lipstick in Ballet (thanks to Australis)

Soft pink shine from Australis. Ballet is the perfect name for this soft candy coloured lipstick. Looks great with my holiday tan.

2) Chanel Rouge Coco Shine Aventure #57

Chanel Rouge Coco Shine Aventure #57

I am in love with Chanel Rouge Coco Shine Aventure #57 because it is so soft and rich. The shine makes lips luscious and very kissable. The hint of pink ads a flush of colour resulting in a  romantic look.

3) Chanel Rouge Coco Shine Liberte #46

Chanel Rouge Coco Shine Liberte #46

I’m a big fan of orange on my lips and the Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in Liberte #46 adds a subtle hint of vibrant colour with a burst of shine. I wear this to the office when I need to look serious but warm.

4) Face of Australia in Coral Bay

Face of Australia Coral Bay

The Face of Australia lipstick in Coral Bay has been my favourite lipstick all year. I can’t go past this colour when I need a pick me up. This would be on Mondays, rainy days, Thursdays (the weekend is so close yet so far) and any day I don’t have time for a full face of make up. Some women do this with red lipstick, I do this with this particular shade of orange.

5) Face of Australia Pink Ambition

Face of Australia Pink Ambition

This is a cute colour on everyone in the world except for me. On me this Pink Ambition colour looks, well, average. In the tube it’s a lovely, shiny, warm purple but on me it turns so dull. A real shame because the texture is velvety and lovely to wear.

6) Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist Intense #15

Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist Intense #15

I bought this Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist Intense #15 at Sephora in New York  last month. I love it! It’s a daring, bold burst of cool purple with a huge amount of shine. After the shoot I wore it all weekend, it is so comfortable and it certainly makes a statement.

Alice Moore in Paris

Fashion Insider: Alice Moore – Director / Publicist at Elysee Publicity

Alice Moore is a Sydney based publicist who started her business in Brisbane with an array of prestigious labels as clients. Now based in Sydney she’s busier than ever. Let’s see what her days are like and what being a fashion publicist is all about.

Alice Moore

Tell us a little about yourself

I started Élysée Publicity in early 2009 to provide the link between Queensland-based designers and the national fashion media. I relocated to Sydney in late 2010 and now look after the publicity for a number of fashion labels, makeup and skincare brands and international fragrance houses.

How did you get your start in fashion?

Whilst working at another agency in Brisbane, I was given the opportunity to do the PR for the opening of Jean Brown. After the opening, I moved to Sydney after getting a job in PR for M.A.C. Cosmetics – it just grew from there.

Why did you choose fashion?

Working in fashion is a girls dream and it is therefore often the choice for many publicists starting out. It’s a lot of hard work as well though so you need to treat it like any other job and just work hard to get the best results for your clients.

Is the fashion industry what you expected it to be?

Yes and no. There are lots of wonderful moments and surreal experiences - tom gunn collaborating with Gary Bigeni for this year’s Australian Fashion Week was a highlight – there is also a lot of hard work.

As I work virtually alone, I have to do absolutely everything – including all the boring admin activities that interns would do in other companies. I find a lot of the more challenging activities are where the rewards are though, they’re where you actually learn and get better at your job – much more so than in the fun, party moments.

What does your job consist of?

Much of my job evolves around submitting the latest product (whether it be clothing, fragrance or makeup) to the magazines so they can shoot it for upcoming issues. I also travel to Brisbane once a month to meet with clients there. I’m also planning a trip to Paris early next year so I can visit some perfumers and see the latest releases.

Describe your week

We’re doing Spring Summer showings at the moment so much of the next few weeks will involve hosting key fashion media at the showroom so they can preview the upcoming collections. Other daily tasks are emails, responding to call outs, pitching new stories, organising the showroom and meeting with clients.

Roughly how many hours do you work per week?

I have no idea – Today is Sunday and I’m up to five so far…

What are the key skills you need for your role?

You need to be very efficient and organised. Good writing and social skills are also essential. And of course, a well-recognized degree is a must. A lot of what you do in PR is taught on the job but a university grounding shows you are dedicated to the industry and this isn’t just a decision based on the latest fad.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

Definitely the amazing relationships I’ve formed along the way – with the designers and my clients, as well as with the press. I’ve made life long friends in this industry.

What do you find challenging?

Fitting everything in and getting everything done! Working out how to grow the business is also very tricky – it requires very careful planning which is something I’m working on at the moment.

What do you do in your time off?

Take my gorgeous puppy to the Rushcutters Bay for some play time.

What’s the highlight of your career so far?

Collaborating with Gary Bigeni for tom gunn and bringing out Romano Ricci from Paris to launch Juliette Has a Gun are just two of the many highlights! Getting to meet amazing perfumers when I visit Paris is also a special moment!

Do you have any advice for someone starting out in fashion?

Work hard – once you get your foot in the door, keep working – the more you push yourself when you’re young, the further you’ll get.

Finish this sentence: Fashion is…

… a job (but a wonderful one at that).

No spend August

No spend August – no shopping challenge

No spend August is basically a no shopping challenge. Francesca and Kim, two girls in my office, were talking about how much they spent on their holidays (one went to Bali and the other to Thailand) and that it would be good to refrain from spending for a bit. They decided that August was the month to do this no shopping challenge in.

Seeing and I just came back from the mothership of all holidays (Croatia, France, US) I thought I’d join them too.

Yes I’m crazy. But cheer me on because here’s what I signed up for…

Rules for No Spend August:

  • NO BUYING FASHION
    • no clothing and accessories – anything that you can adorn
    • no making clothes from purchased materials
    • no making jewellery from purchased items (damn)
    • no buying dog clothing (double damn)
    • no buying children’s clothing
  • NO BEAUTY EXPENSES other than restocking
    • you can keep doing the things you do (like monthly facials or haircuts) but no adding additional things to your treatments
    • doggie day spa is allowed (phew) since that has to happen every 4 weeks anyways
    • restocking of your beauty items is ok
    • no new items to be purchased during the entire month
  • SOCIALISING AND DINING OUT IS OK
    • like Francesca says “If you can’t shop you’ve gotta be allowed to drink!”

So here we are, day 1 of a 1 month shopping ban. Thank God Chanel opens in Brisbane in October because I am going to have to shop up big time after this.

Wish me luck!

Vanja
