Vanja Stace Zagreb wedding

Wedding guest outfit

I always find it hard finding the perfect wedding guest outfit. Dress codes these days are very loose and then there’s the international wedding issue… Customs vary from country to country and so do dress expectations.

Hubs and I went for the safe option – better to be overdressed than not. Enter a tuxedo for him and a glorious chartreuse Nicola Finetti dress for me.

I had my make up done by Simona Antonovic and the hair was done by Mijo Majhen from uber swanky Glamour salon (Zagreb).

Zagreb – outfit post

After my fab make up session with Simona Antonovic I decided to hit the streets of Zagreb and do some outfit shots.

You have no idea how much my husband hates taking photos so I am so grateful he took these pics for me. I love these pics. I just felt so great that day, so ME.

Make up session with Simona Antonovic – Croatia’s top make up artist

In our first week in Croatia we were guests at an event and I enlisted Simona Antonovic, Croatia’s top make up artist, to make me look fabulous.

Simona creates amazing work for Croatian magazines like Elle, Cosmopolitan, Gloria, Gloria Glam, Story and Story Book.

She also works with well-known and established Croatian fashion brands and designers on advertising campaigns and fashion shows – Elfs, Amarie, Linea, I-Gle, Silvio Vujčič, Keti Balogh. She is a residential make up artist for Cro-a-porter – the most important fashion show in Croatia.

This woman is beyond talented.

I visited her in her studio at Zagreb at Medvedgradska 39, which is just next to Glamour salon – one of the best hair salons in the country.

In order to show you what she can do with mere mortals like myself I have decided to show you a ‘before’ photo of me without ANY make up. Eeek! You’ve been warned.

And there you go. One fabulous hour with a wonderful artist. Did I learn anything? Yes, I learned that I need Simona to move to Australia and do my make up every day!

If you are in Croatia (lucky thing you) then contact Simona for your next make up.

My holiday – Zagreb, the capital of Croatia

This June was the first time I went back to Croatia since 1998. I moved to New Zealand from Croatia a few years before that and somehow, while adjusting to a new world, I lost touch with the place I come from.

So last month I went back and stayed in Zagreb with family. It was also the first time my husband visited Croatia.

The place has changed greatly and in some ways it has stayed the same. I think the biggest change though happened within myself.

These photos are from my first days back there, it was late spring and everything looked beautiful.

Tell us a little about yourself

I’m simple person, love to travel, people with good sense of humor and chocolate! Also I’m very passionate about my work and things that I love.

How did you get your start in fashion?

I discovered and got hooked on fashion magazines when I was very young. That bond remained through high school, university and present time.

Why did you choose fashion?

It’s intriguing and always changing. I love magical fantasies that fashion provides to people. I’m also fascinated with the power of communication that clothes have among us.

Is the fashion industry what you expected it to be?

Yes. It’s an industry like any other but it has its own charm.

What does your job consist of?

I have a full time job as a Fashion Brand Developer. Street style blogging is my hobby and a freelance job but it consists of taking photos, editing and posting them, doing community marketing, doing and giving interviews…

Describe your week

It’s similar to everything I’ve said above, only I don’t do interviews every week :)

Roughly how many hours do you work per week?

It depends from project to project, but I would say approximately 60.

What are the key skills you need for your role?

You need to have good eye to recognise great style on people. Fashion knowledge background is also very useful, good communication skills. You mustn’t have any prejudices towards people.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

I love to meet new people, capture not only their style but also a glimpse of their personality.

What do you find challenging?

I try to move my boundaries and be better with every photo I take. Finding new things that move and inspire me.

What do you do in your time off?

I’m learning French and I pole dance. I love to go out, be with my friends and family.

What’s the highlight of your career so far?

I would say doing Global Street Chic for New York ELLE.com. And also British Vogue.com listed me as one of the best Next Generation street style photographers.

Do you have any advice for someone starting out in fashion?

In every moment you must be able to objectively value your quality. Know who your competition is. You must believe in yourself and your work and never give up, be persistent. And the most important thing is that you love your job and that you are enthusiastic about it.

Finish this sentence: Fashion is…

… just clothes if you don’t have the personality to embody it.
